Advice
The Forum raised no issues with this item and noted the
Chair’s comments that the proposal responds to the particular circumstances and
safety considerations at these locations. The City considers this to be a
site-specific outcome and not indicative of a broader change in its approach to
walking and cycling. The City remains committed to improve and expand
facilities that support active and sustainable transport across the local area.
Background
In February 2023, the Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee approved 157 one-way streets and lanes being changed to allow bicycles to travel in both directions, with installation of “bicycles excepted” signs and bike logos on the pavement. This included Berwick, O’Briens and Palmer Lanes in Darlinghurst.
The signs and pavement markings were installed in March 2026 and in accordance with Transport for NSW Technical Direction on Signposting for contra-flow bicycle facilities (TTD 2014/002)
Since then, there have been numerous contacts from residents
requesting a review of the three lanes suitability for contra-flow bicycle
facilities.
