Advice
The Forum raised no
issues with this Item and noted the updated submission table as tabled at the
meeting.
City staff also
advised that staff would respond to the written submission.
The Forum also noted
the following questions raised by a resident, together with the responses
provided to address the matters raised.
1.
What is
the rationale for not removing a typical car parking space in these
locations?
2.
Were
these particular car-share parking spaces closed due to low
utilization?
3.
Are all
35 shared car parking spaces associated with the same car share operator?
Or spread across multiple providers?
4.
Are
there still adequate shared car parking spaces/ share cars in these
specific suburbs for residents and locals that need them/ use them?
5.
If any
of these 35 shared car parking spaces are high-demand, is the CoS actively
working to relocate that car share parking space to a nearby alternative
on-street or off-street location so that the community does not
lose car-share access altogether?
City staff advised
that the current strategy for new micromobility parking bays is generally to
prioritise installing them in kerb space that’s currently underutilised e.g. No
Stopping, No Parking, disused car share parking bays etc. This accelerates approval
of the new bays by lowering impacts to the community.
All car share
parking bays nominated for replacement so far have been left unoccupied by the
various commercial operators. Operators surrendering car share parking spaces
is a commercial decision and indicates demand in the area is insufficient to
justify ongoing provision of a share car.
The City remains
committed to maintaining car share parking at areas where there is demand and
continuing to install new car share parking spaces in high-demand areas like
Victoria Street, Darlinghurst to support operators and the local community.
We have confirmed
that the car share parking bays being surrendered are not all from the same
operator but won’t provide further information on the matter as it may be
commercially sensitive.
Background
The City of Sydney supports share bikes as a sustainable, low-cost
transport option for everyday travel and deliveries. Use has grown rapidly,
with 3.7 million trips in 2025 (a 91% increase from 2024. However, the rise in
share bike and food delivery use has led to more bikes parked on footpaths in
busy pedestrian areas. The community is requesting that these bikes be parked
on the road to protect footpath amenity.
