Future Use of Circular Quay End-of-Trip Bike Parking Facility

Decision Maker: Council

Decision status: Recommendations Determined

Decision:

Moved by Councillor Thompson, seconded by Councillor Worling –

It is resolved that:

(A)      Council note:

(i)         since September 2025, the City of Sydney has run a public bike hub with end-of-trip facilities near Sydney Place in Circular Quay, accessible off Ah Toy Lane

(ii)        the hub is operated by Secure Parking on a subscription basis, and offers parking for 200 bikes, 400 lockers, 28 showers, and a clothes dryer, which is accessible 24 hours a day for members

(iii)      there has been low patronage, partly due to

(a)       the City’s successful policy of requiring and incentivising new development to provide cycling end-of-trip riding facilities

(b)       the growing popularity of share bikes and e-bikes

(iv)      the Bike Hub will permanently cease operations on 31 October 2026, 13 months after it opened

(B)      Council further note:

(i)         this is the only public end-of-trip facility of its kind in the city centre

(ii)        that public cycling facilities enable workers to cycle into the city for the many who don’t have such facilities in their offices

(iii)      the City also operates secure parking spots for bikes at the council-run carparks at Goulburn Street and Kings Cross

(iv)      the Chief Executive Officer is providing advice to Council on potential future uses of the bike hub with a recommendation and next steps.

Carried unanimously.
