Recommendation

It is recommended that the Forum review the reallocation of parking on the southern side of James Street, Redfern between the points 14 metres and 26 metres (two car spaces) west of George Street as:

·                "No Parking 8am-6pm Mon-Fri Stolen Generations Council NSW/ACT Inc. & Aboriginal Children’s Service Vehicles Excepted" and

·                "1P 6-8pm Mon-Fri Permit Holders Excepted Area 41".

Background

The Stolen Generations Council NSW/ACT Inc. & Aboriginal Children’s Service, located at 18 George Street, Redfern, has requested consideration for the provision of dedicated parking spaces for the organisation’s operational vehicles. The request is intended to support key service activities, including member and child pick‑up and drop‑off, delivery of community programs, and meeting client and operational needs. The provision of dedicated parking would improve safe, efficient, and reliable access for clients, community members, staff, and volunteers.

In response to this request, it is proposed to convert two existing parking spaces in James Street, adjacent to the frontage of the organisation’s premises, to dedicated parking for use by the Stolen Generations Council NSW/ACT Inc. & Aboriginal Children’s Service. This proposal is intended to better accommodate the organisation’s operational requirements while maintaining appropriate on‑street parking needs.

The proposal aligns with the City of Sydney’s Inclusion (Disability) Action Plan 2025–2029, particularly the objective of creating “liveable communities” by reducing barriers to access and improving on‑street accessible parking and safe drop‑off arrangements near key social infrastructure.

Dedicated parking close to the premises supports equitable participation, dignity, and independence for people with disability and older community members, consistent with the City's commitments to inclusion, reconciliation, and social sustainability. These considerations, together with the significant community benefit provided by the services delivered from the site, have been considered in the assessment of the proposal.
