Background

In February 2023, the Local Pedestrian, Cycling and Traffic Calming Committee approved 157 one-way streets and lanes being changed to allow bicycles to travel in both directions, with installation of “bicycles excepted” signs and bike logos on the pavement. This included Berwick, O’Briens and Palmer Lanes in Darlinghurst.

The signs and pavement markings were installed in March 2026 and in accordance with Transport for NSW Technical Direction on Signposting for contra-flow bicycle facilities (TTD 2014/002)

Since then, there have been numerous contacts from residents requesting a review of the three lanes suitability for contra-flow bicycle facilities.
